3.2 Major components. Unless otherwise specified by the procuring activity
(see 6.2), the survival kit containers shall include all of the major components
listed on figure 1 and described herein, (Note: The restraint provision of
the basic container, the retention straps and the deployment sensing cable
assembly are listed but not shown on figure 1.)
3.3 Selection of specifications and standards. Specifications and standards
for necessary commodities and services not specified herein shall be selected in
accordance with MIL-STD-143.
3.4 Materials. Nonmagnetic materials shall be used for all components except
where magnetic materials offer definite advantages. Mateerials that are not
susceptible to fungus attack shall be used to the greatest extent practicable.
Materials that are susceptible to fungus attack, if used, shall be treated with
a fungicidal agent. The materials used in the construction of the components of
the survival kit containers shall be the lightest possible weight consistent with
configuration, strength, and any other requirements specified herein.
3.4.1 Metals. Metals shall be corrosion resistant or suitably treated to
resist corrosion due to fuels, salt spray, or atomospheric conditions likely to
be met in storage or normal service.
3.4.1.1 Dissimilar metals. Unless suitably protected against electrolytic
corrosion, dissimilar metals shall not be used in intimate contact with each
other. Dissimilar metals are defined in MIL-STD-889.
3.4.2 Nometallic materials. The use of nonmetallic materials shall require
approval the procuring activity, for the specific application involved.
3.4.2.2.1 Fiber glass material. If fiber glass material is used in the con-
struction of the basic container, it shall be manufactured in accordance with
the requirements of MIL-P-9400. The fiber glass material shall meet the physical
requirements of table I of this specification and the workmanship requirements of
L-P-383, Glass cloth, if used, shall be preimpregnated cloth. Resins shall be
in accordance, with MIL-R-7575 or MIL-R-9300 for polyester resin or epoxy resin,
respectively.
3.4.3 Protective treatment. If materials that are subject to deterioration
when exposed to climatic and environmental conditions likely to occur during
service usage are used in the construction of the basic container, the materials
shall be protected against such deterioration in a manner that will not in any
way prevent compliance with the performance requirements of this specification.
The use of any protective coating that will crack, chip, or scale with age or
extreme climatic and environmental conditions shall be avoided.
3.4.3.1 Aluminum parts. All aluminum parts shall be anodized in accordance
with MIL-A-8625. All exposed parts shall be processed after anodizing with a
potassium bichromate seal and dyed a neutral color suitable to the procuring
activity.
